Daytime Sequins part 1: Winter Sparkle
Image above: Fashionista
There are countless blogposts on 'casual' sequins, and yet it remains terrifying to whip out sparkly clothes for a daytime outfit - leaving you feeling paranoid that everyone is secretly giggling at how overdressed you are. So I have tried to scour all of the great sequin outfits out there to create a guide to introducing your glittery clothes to the sunlight hours. First up - the winter edition. Wearing sequins in winter can be especially tricky because Christmas is on everyone's mind, it's easy to look like you are a liiittle too excited to start celebrating, or are in the denial phase about Christmas being over. But it can be done!
First, let me get one thing straight: sequins will NEVER look casual!!
The whole concept of 'casual' sequins is a dream - anything sparkly will never look like something you would be wearing to stay in and watch tv all day. But that is not a bad thing, and it certainly doesn't mean the sequins can't be normal day wear. The trick is to embrace their shiny extravagance and accept that this is a good thing. Instead of adding the most slouchy, casual top you have in an effort to play it cool, play around with the more indulgent look of the glitter. Rich hues work really well in doing this, as do luxurious fabrics. So, for example, a good, thick knit complements the luxe texture of sequins. The thick texture of the knit ensures that the sequin piece isn't the sole attention-grabbing part of the outfit, making the whole look feel like less of a statement. Luxurious looking coats balance out the extravagance of sequins well, too. They don't make the sequins more casual, but elevate the whole outfit to a more cohesive look (compared to it being all 'hey, look at my shiny skirt!'). The more interesting the texture and the richer the hue, the better!
Take a look at some of the great looks below. Sure, most of these were taking during fashion week, when it is much easier to prance about looking all glittery, but they still manage to make the overall effect feel calmer and more like a fun, extravagant outfit than just being all about the sequins.
